The three primary business forms used today are:

Cut Sheet Forms
Continuous Forms
Unit or Snap-a-Part Forms

Cut Sheet Forms

A one-ply form usually 8-1/2 x 11 printed on a laser printer. It can be a single piece of letterhead or contain multiple perforations, scores and ink coverage. Cut sheets are widely used in all businesses. In many cases, they have replaced Continuous and Snap-A-Part Forms, but this is not always the most economical method to use.

Continuous Forms

Custom Continuous Forms are still the most economical and dependable document when outputting information, especially when multiple copies are needed. Also know as Pinfeed or Computer Forms, Continuous Forms can be either single ply or multiple part. When an internal process requires multiple copies, continuous forms will out perform the Laser Cut Sheet. The throughput speed is cost efficient because more than one copy can be imaged in one pass. Although a mature product, Continuous Forms still play an important place in many business functions.

Ribbons for Thermal Transfer Printers

THERMAL RIBBONS

In many thermal transfer applications the ribbon is the most expensive aspect of thermal printing.  The ribbon is fed through the printer at the same rate as the label or form.  The ribbon, printer, and application material must be compatible for a successful thermal printing.

Three Types of Thermal Transfer Ribbons

1. Hard Wax Based Ribbons (1A - Color)
2. Wax / Resin Ribbons
3. Resin Based Ribbons

1. Hard Wax Based Ribbons:

Designed for high resolution graphics, text, and bar codes
Compose approximately 80% of thermal ribbon sales
Easily transfer ink at high speeds
Print on a wide range of paper, labels, tags, and synthetics
Great for general purpose applications

1A.  Hard Wax (Colors) Ribbons:

Same as above, but can print in an assortment of colors:

Red  Purple  White
Blue Brown  Gray
Green Gold

2. Wax / Resin Based Ribbons:

  Resistent to smearing and scratching
Recommended for coated stocks and films
More durable than wax based ribbons
Good for heavily handled or environmentally challenged labeling applications

3. Resin Based Ribbons:

Designed for maximum durability
Suitable for demanding applications
Required by UL and CSA to be used on product marking labels
Good choice for high temperatures and/or chemically challenged labeling applications
